Odia language under threat in Odisha’s Kotia

Bhubaneswar: At a time when the Odisha government is making tall claims over preserving and promoting the Odia language, the situation in the Kotia area of Koraput district is totally different.

Hundreds of children of Odia-speaking people residing in the Kotia region are deprived of studying the Odia language.

In Fagunsineri village of Kotia region, the primary students have shifted to Telugu medium schools due to a lack of teachers in Odia medium schools, thanks to the apathy of the BJD government.

“The teachers of Odisha government-run schools are not coming regularly in Kotia region. Many teaching posts are lying vacant in Odia medium schools in the bordering villages. That’s why the local students shifted to Telugu medium schools run by the Andhra Pradesh government,” said a villager.

The situation is such worse that many local students even fail to read and write in the Odia language, he alleged.

There is a yawning gap between the words and deeds of the Odisha government in promoting the Odia language in the bordering areas of the State. The BJD government appears to be just making tall claims without any matching efforts on the ground.
