Bhubaneswar, Sep 18: The rise of remote work, became a global norm during the Covid-19 pandemic, reshaping how professionals engage with their jobs. This shift sparked a growing desire for flexibility, not just in hours, but in geography.
In response, nearly 70 countries now offer digital nomad visas, enabling individuals to live abroad while working remotely for employers or clients based elsewhere. These visas typically span several months to a few years and are often renewable. Applicants usually need to show proof of income or savings, have valid health insurance, a clean criminal record, and secure accommodation. While many nations allow online applications, some still require in-person visits to embassies.
Europe has emerged as the leading destination for digital nomads, claiming nine of the top ten spots. Countries like Spain, Italy, Greece, and Portugal offer attractive visa terms, including family inclusion and multi-year extensions. Germany and Hungary also provide pathways for freelancers and remote workers, while Croatia stands out with its 18-month visa. Outside Europe, Thailand, Japan, and Mauritius appeal with their unique blend of affordability, culture, and climate. Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa allows stays up to 180 days, while Japan offers a six-month permit to select nationalities. Mauritius, notably, provides a free visa with a swift approval process.
