Seven days after rail tragedy; trains back on tracks, victims recount harrowing experience

 Bhubaneswar/Balasore, Jun 9: In one of the deadliest train accidents in India that have shaken the nation, 288 passengers died and nearly 1000 were injured when three trains collided in Balasore on Friday (June 2). Six days have passed since the horrifying incident. While trains are back on the tracks, victims recount their harrowing experiences.

The unfortunate incident took place on June 2 and involved two passengers and a goods train near Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district. The mishap claimed as many as 288 lives while many passengers are undergoing treatment at several hospitals in the State. 

According to reports, 193 bodies were brought to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, out of which 111 have been handed over to their respective family members. At least six NDA tests were conducted to identify the body. However, 82 bodies are still kept in containers in AIIMS Bhubaneswar. 

Meanwhile, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan held a review meeting with AIIMS Director and other officials in Bhubaneswar.
On the other hand, CBI continued its probe into the train mishap. A two-member team of the central agency collected computer harddisks and some documents from the Bahanaga Bazar Railway Station on Friday. 

South Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Aditya Kumar Chaudhary on Friday said that all lines in  Balasore district are fit and trains are plying on all four lines. Compensation has been given for 661 cases so far and Rs 22.66 crore have been disbursed in connection with the accident.

The accident occurred when the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express collided with a stationary freight train, causing several coaches to derail. Howrah Express, coming from Yesvantpur, was also impacted in the mishap.
