Bhubaneswar, Aug 2: In a relief to the people of Odisha, three truckloads of potatoes from Uttar Pradesh reached Aiginia go-down this morning, while seven more lorries loaded with tuber are expected to arrive in the city later in the day.

With the arrival of UP potatoes, the price of the daily consumed tuber is likely to fall gradually. The retail price of potatoes now stands at Rs 40 per kg in markets across the State.

According to the information, each truck carrying 30 tonnes of potatoes is coming to Odisha. Thus, 300 tonnes of potatoes will be available for customers by tomorrow morning. While a quintal of potato is bought at Rs 2,400, a transport cost of Rs 300 takes the total procurement cost to Rs 2,700 per quintal.

Sources said the Odisha government has decided to buy potatoes from Uttar Pradesh instead of West Bengal as the latter has adopted a dillydallying attitude in supplying potatoes to Odisha. A government team will soon visit UP to seek support from the State government.
